To merely say that Johnny Cash was one of the most important figures in modern country music or early rock -n- roll would be an utter disservice. For even though his art falls squarely within and helped to shape both genres, Johnny Cash was an artist who existed in neither. His was a world that drew on many types of traditional and contemporary American music and imbued them with his own deeply personal experiences - which were often very dark - to produce a style and sound that's both introspective and in-your-face. Many artists have tried hard to peek into the soul of the Man in Black and conjure his sound, but none of them has succeeded. .

From his earliest rockabilly sides on Sun Records in the 1950s to the spare sound of his final "comeback" albums of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cash's deep, resonant baritone and affecting music remain transcendent and instantly recognizable. There was only one Johnny Cash and there will never be another.

With his Presley-like mystique, a strapping baritone voice and songs with universal lunchbucket appeal, Johnny Cash reached one of many career high-water marks with his sprawling 1963 epic, Blood, Sweat And Tears. From the perspiration-drenched, eight-minute version of "The Legend Of John Henry's Hammer" to "Busted," Harlan Howard's down 'n' out hard-luck story, Cash made everything he recorded sound like it had been written just for him. This exact replica of Cash's 1963 classic -- on...

To hear Johnny Cash's swaggering Sun Records-era material is to marvel at one of the primal source-streams of what was fast becoming the headwaters of rock 'n' roll. Cash's craggy, lunch-bucket vocals on gleaming original versions of songs like "Cry! Cry! Cry!," "Get Rhythm," "Big River," and "I Walk the Line," backed by the signature guitar style of Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant?s steady bass, are really just the tip of the iceberg corralled on this stunning collection. "Folsom Prison...
