To merely say that Johnny Cash was one of the most important figures in modern country music or early rock -n- roll would be an utter disservice. For even though his art falls squarely within and helped to shape both genres, Johnny Cash was an artist who existed in neither. His was a world that drew on many types of traditional and contemporary American music and imbued them with his own deeply personal experiences - which were often very dark - to produce a style and sound that's both introspective and in-your-face. Many artists have tried hard to peek into the soul of the Man in Black and conjure his sound, but none of them has succeeded. .

From his earliest rockabilly sides on Sun Records in the 1950s to the spare sound of his final "comeback" albums of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cash's deep, resonant baritone and affecting music remain transcendent and instantly recognizable. There was only one Johnny Cash and there will never be another.

Cash, Johnny - Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison LP
Price: $28.98
Availability: In Stock
Item #: LP 5361 -

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison fully captures Cash’s gritty intensity and hard-headed humanity, capturing a high-energy set performed for an equally spirited audience. With a set list tailored for the occasion, Cash focuses on songs dealing with crime and imprisonment, balancing dark subject matter with wry, playful humor. The album opens, appropriately enough, with the venerable “Folsom Prison Blues,” and continues with such outlaw anthems as “Cocaine Blues,” “25 Minutes to Go, “The Wall” and...

Perhaps even more so than its predecessor, Johnny Cash at San Quentin captures Cash at his most raw and uninhibited. The artist’s raucous rapport with his captive audience is obvious on an inspired mix of Cash classics (“I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues”), jailhouse ballads (“Starkville City Jail,” “San Quentin”), traditional tunes (“Wreck of the Old 97,” “There’ll Be Peace in the Valley”) and well-chosen covers (Bob Dylan’s “Wanted Man,” the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Darling Companion”). The...

With his Presley-like mystique, a strapping baritone voice and songs with universal lunchbucket appeal, Johnny Cash reached one of many career high-water marks with his sprawling 1963 epic, Blood, Sweat And Tears. From the perspiration-drenched, eight-minute version of “The Legend Of John Henry’s Hammer” to “Busted,” Harlan Howard’s down ‘n’ out hard-luck story, Cash made everything he recorded sound like it had been written just for him. This exact replica of Cash’s 1963 classic —on...
