One of the finest - and most underrated - '60s soul divas, the Detroit-raised Bettye LaVette has finally begun to get her due, thanks largely to the recent generation of crate-digging soul seekers. After signing to Atlantic in 1963, LaVette scored a Top 10 R&B hit with her first single for the label before going on to cut more legendary sides for deep soul imprints Calla, Scepter, Silver Fox, and SSS International. Still very much active and recording, LaVette today enjoys a dedicated following on the Northern soul circuit.
