Watson (1935-1996) kicked off his career as the teen dynamo of the Houston blues of the late 40's. When his parents separated in 1950, his mother took 15 year old John to LA, another blues/R&B hotbed. He was billed as Young John Watson on his first records for Federal, a King Records subsidiary label, in 1952. That lasted two years. After he saw the 1954 Joan Crawford western Johnny Guitar, he became Johnny "Guitar" Watson forever. He'd record again under that name for King in the late 50's and early 60's.
