High On
A Ridge Top ('72)
focuses on classics as interpreted by a San Francisco original: The
Youngbloods. This, their final album serves to be a diverse and highly enjoyable swan
song. This time equipped with harp, mandolin, and sax The
Youngbloods deliver one original tune ("Dreamboat") while offering their
psychedelic San Francisco take on exquisitely curated cuts from Bob Dylan,
Robert Johnson, the Beatles, along with other folk & Americana
standards. The performances here are all executed in a
relaxed, effortless style that perfectly hightlights the
voice of Jesse Colin Young. The Youngbloods put their stamp on "La
Bamba," fully re-imagining the song and making it
their own. From the swinging, sax based take on "Running Bear," the jazzy
Wurlitzer-enhanced version of The Beatles' "She Came in Through
the Bathroom Window," to the piano based finale of Robert Johnson's "Kind
Hearted Woman," High On A Ridge Top marks a perfect end to the
Youngbloods' studio albums, and is a required spin for any
fan of the band.
